Radio Murmurs

Short Film

A proposito del progetto

"Between her sexual partner and the boy she falls in love with, Ann is searching to understand her sexuality. An obssessive voice from the radio turns her attention inwards, where the answers reside."

Radio Murmurs is Sangyi (Mel) Zhao's thesis project at University Paris 8 (Master of Film Directing). Her thesis professor is the French director Jean-Paul Civeyrac, whose last film "Mes Provenciales" was selected at the Panorama seciton of Berlinale, 2018. The short film is in digital format and last 18 minutes.

Director’s statement:

When a woman doesn’t understand her body, the society and the man define it for her. I hope, to see a woman understanding her body through her own vision. This is the starting point of the film.

By alternating her relationship with her lovers and her strange adventure of discovery, I wish to show how a woman separates herself from her lovers’ way of seeing her. Even if this independence leads to a kind of loneliness. Perhaps she has always been lonely. And that is why her lovers couldn’t get to her because she couldn’t get to herself. It is a film of an independent female. It is also a film about a profound loneliness. Instead of telling a story with conventional narrative structure, I am more interested in showing an abstract evolution.

My film theory studies and my different experiences at short film festivals have made me realize that film industry is still dominated by man and his vision. In a natural way, I have somehow gathered, around this film, a team composed by mostly female technicians.  Professor Simone Bitton at University Paris 8 said, after reading the script of Radio Murmurs, that this film is typically a “today’s young female author’s film”. I suppose this is the other value of this film other than my artistic ambitions.

A cosa serviranno i fondi ?

The fuding will be used for paying for the buying decoration elements, renting sound materials, renting cars for transporting materials and for feeding the hardworking team during the shooting days!!
