GENESIS OF THE PROJECT

For more than two years, I habe been interested in paying tribute to a deceased friend who died in the Maelbeek Metro Station bombing in Brussels, on March 22, 2016. I decided to pay tribute through a short film, co-written with Julie  Bertrand.

"A day after spring"

The point of view is that of a war photographer, Marta, whose keen eyes track down violence around the world. She makes her work a human weapon to denounce acts of violence.

During a report in Beirut, she met Samih, a musician who experienced the civil war in Lebanon. Through this meeting, without her knowing it, the stalker that animates her since these beginning subtly metamorphoses.

                       

For this man who lived in the heart of the conflict, it was his musical instrument that saved him. Through music he knew how to find refuge, where poetry still exists.His musical art offers him another quest, that of being invisible.

My intention is to make a film which, when faced of the violence of terrorist attack and the wars, infuses an impluse of solidarity as a necessity of reconcilation and in each one of us. 

To complete this tribute and make this film a reality, I need your help, support and sharing to realize this short fiction film "A day of spring".

SYNOPSIS

In an appartment, a man puts a bomb in a bag and goes out. He crosses paths with Samih and hers the music the street musician. They go down into a subway station one behind the other. It is the day of the popular parade. Children in costumes expect to find Samih, their music teacher and participate int the parade with him. He cannot be found. Marta a war photographer remains silent and remembers. Marta met Samih a year earlier while taking photographs in a conflict zone. Samih saved her life. Then he helped her discover the positive and vibrant side of his country, before following Marta to Brussels.

How will Marta stay survive after Samih's death in the bombing ?

 

 

 

 

A cosa serviranno i fondi ?

The funding will allow us to shoot the film in LEBANON in the summer of  2019.

Why shoot this movie in Lebanon?

From 1978 to 1990, a civil war affected Lebanon. Traces are still very strong in some parts of the country. The far-reaching effects of this violence motivate me to film it in Beirut and across the country. A city still physically marked by indelible traces of war. Another reason is my meeting with Pole Seif who, like the character of the film Samihr, lived part of the civil war and found refuge in music.

Lebanese photographer CHRISTINA MALKOUN

Since the genesis of the project, a collaboration has been created with Christina Malkoun, a Lebanese photographer whose photos have been awarded by different organizations and soon maybe the  UNESCO. Through her images, you will be able to feel the sincerity, the commitment and the humanism of Christina Malkoun who will lend her look to the character of Marta. She will also accompany us during the shooting to make the photos of the character of Marta in the different natural places of this road movie.

The funding includes:
- 7 round-trip airplane tickets Brussels-Beirut-Brussels
- the rental of IMAGE equipment: camera, optics, accessories, lighting and sound equipment
- renting two vehicles for one week and gas
- renting some sets for indoor scenes
- food and accommodation for the team.

 

A proposito del progettista

ASTRID MERTENS, graduate of INSAS in 2000 (National Institute of Performing Arts), cinema section, option editing / script. She has been a script writer on many short films. Then, she worked with the Avalon music studio where she coordinated and directed many formats in the world that she particularly loves, especially music.

Then she coordinated and directed an experimental documentary about a Belgian composer, "Walter Hus, wind of another world", co-produced by Actoria Films with the support of NTTRB and Atelier Graphoui.

In 2016, she made a KINO "Frequency" in 76 hours (filming, editing and broadcasting) as part of the Kino Kabaret of Brussels where her collaboration with the chief operator Aldo Piscina began and where she met Olivier Tordeurs, the producer of this current project, "A day after springtime". With the support of NTTRB, Thomas Dubucq.
